Fifth Wednesday of Lent
John 8:31-42
Friends, in today’s Gospel reading, Jesus tries to tell his audience, a mix of believers, skeptics, and critics, who he is - the promised Messiah sent by God. Many refuse to accept it, becoming increasingly hostile to Jesus who threatens their fundamental belief system, their honor (being called “slaves to sin” and even “children of the devil” in following verses) and way of life.
But for those who “continue in” Jesus’ word, they will be his true disciples, and they will know the truth, and the truth will set them free. Think about Jesus’ identifying himself as the Word and the Truth. Not only will his believers come to trust Jesus’ claim of Messianic identity, but also to know and be familiar with the person of Jesus.
Being free is hinged on “continuing” or “remaining” or “abiding” in Jesus’ word. So how do we do that? One way is to recognize that being a Christian is not about assenting to a list of doctrines that is locked in time, becoming rigid and judgmental. Rather, it is a daily sensitivity to the Holy Spirit as we look for and listen for Jesus in the Bible and in the world around us.
