John 8:21-30

“Who are you?” they asked.

There is a lot of attention lately, around how people present themselves in Social Media. At times I present myself as a fabulous knitter when in reality I can barely hold the needles and yarn together to make a scarf. In other times, I am disturbed when I see a meme or some quote that is used to make a point drastically different from the truth I believe about Jesus. Do these posters know who Jesus really is? Do I myself really know Jesus? Although subject to interpretation, even Peter confessed he did not know the man in Matthew 26:72.

Much like reading a knitting pattern to know how to create a garment, I have learned that I have to read scripture and listen to sermons to understand who God is. If I do not understand the knitting pattern, then I am likely to make something the way I think it ought to look. If I do not understand who God is, then I am also likely to make God in an image that I can understand, picking and choosing some of my favorite characteristics…in other words, a Jesus who is of this world.

I admit I don’t know and accept ALL of who God is, then am I merely making God into someone I would LIKE him to be? And if so, can I be sure I am doing the will of God?
