First Monday in Lent

Matthew 25:31–46

In this parable, Jesus offers insight into how we treat those in need. Why help? By these caring actions, or lack thereof, someday we will all be sorted as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. The sheep – the helpers -- will be blessed. The goats – those who looked the other way – well, they’ll receive a pretty harsh fate. Gulp.

Good thing I’m so nice and super helpful to those in need! Especially those that really deserve it. Ok, maybe not those people, but everyone else. Really.

And what’s that you say, Jesus? All those times I helped my neighbor, I helped You? Good for me!

Wait, what? The times I looked the other way? The times I passed judgments, made excuses, or had a bout of compassion fatigue? "Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me."

Double gulp.

Lord, I know You sit with me in those shortcomings. Help me to see You in my neighbors. Strengthen me to do my best to see and meet the needs of others. Even those people. Ok, ok, especially those people. I am so grateful for your Grace and for communities faith with which I can learn, grow, fail, and do better, day by day.

Eternal life for the sheep-ish! Amen.
