John 5: 30-47

Jesus spends a lot of time and energy in today’s Scripture passage trying to get the Jews to realize He is the Son of God and He and the Father are one.  He cites the prophets of the Old Testament and John the Baptist as messengers of this ultimate coming.  Instead the Jews search for the answer to eternal life in the Scriptures while basically ignoring the Savior standing before them – the one who has healed countless people and performed miracles before their very eyes.   Their close-minded stubbornness prevents their hearts from accepting the Messiah.

What does this passage say about us?  Are we closed off to a powerful relationship with Christ because it might require too much from us or things are going so smoothly so why bother?  Do we wax and wane with a faith that moves between hot and cold based on our life situations at any given moment?  Or do we say in the heart and mind, “You are my beloved Savior Jesus Christ – the Son of God – who gifts me with eternal life and without you I am nothing?”

God, please give me unwavering faith.  Amen.
