Luke 13: 1-9

The first part of this Gospel reading is a conversation between Jesus and some people discussing the harshness of someone’s potential death if they do not repent their sins.  The second part of the selection is the parable of the fig tree not bearing fruit.  The gardener requests the vineyard owner one more year to nurture the tree to grow figs and if it does not, it can be cut down.

Upon reflection, I am struck by two themes in this New Testament reading.  The first is the significance of repenting our sins.  I feel this stresses the importance of asking forgiveness for our sins, which can help us relieve personal pain physically and/or mentally.  Through the parable of the fig tree, Jesus is telling us that it takes time for us to grow and mature in our faith.  He realizes this and gives us to chance to mature and we need help doing this.  This can be achieved through prayer, reflection and learning more about Jesus through conversation reading the Bible, listening and talking with others.
