Luke 6:27-38
For me, this passage is difficult to understand. “Turn the other cheek?” “Award the thief more of my possessions?” Jesus instructs us to give others anything they need, lend without expecting repayment, and love those who don’t love us back. We’re told not to judge or condemn. His mandates are counterintuitive. I can envision a theoretical Bible Study discussion that includes the words “but,” “context,” and “what about X?”
Buried in between all these directives is verse 31: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” With this sentence, things make more sense. If I’m angry or frustrated enough to strike someone else, a non-aggressive response is more likely to deescalate the situation. If I’m at the point in my life where I need charity from another person, additional generosity would be welcome. Not being judged or receiving forgiveness can help me to heal and learn from my mistakes. With his words, Jesus provides a framework for treating others with dignity, illustrating ways we can reflect God’s love in the midst an earthly life.
