Luke 13:31-35

The setting of this reading finds Jesus in a frightening and dangerous place. We hear death threats from both Herod and from the people of Jerusalem as Jesus continues his ministry of casting out demons and performing cures. Trouble if he stays there, trouble if he goes on. But Jesus knows what he must do. He has a very clear sense of mission.

As I read these words, I wonder amid my changing life, and this changing world, about what my mission is now. I am so grateful for this Lenten time we are given every year to get back to the center, back to the basics. Jesus tells us time and again to love one another, and in this passage he shows us that love by continuing to help those who need it most. He will stay and finish the work he has begun.

I am here, in a frightening and dangerous world, and although my gifts may have changed, and the world may have changed, I can take the time in prayer to discern how my current gifts align with the current needs of the world. And while I am here, I will love the people who are here with me.
