Matthew 5:43-48

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. There is something both challenging and mobilizing about this Gospel passage. In our current climate of much disagreement and even attack among those who disagree on many issues, the focus on love within the struggle is so important. God truly does bring both joys and sorrows upon all His children, we ourselves, our loved ones, our allies and our opponents. Perhaps we need to focus more on the common experiences of all humans to find the common ground where we can authentically listen and learn from one another. We don't have to agree. We don't have to experience feelings of love toward our foes. We are called to pray for those we love and those we do not. Love is a verb and doing love toward all takes practice. Prayer is the first step toward the perfection of which Jesus speaks.
